On Monday, June 25, 2026, Pope Leo XIV announced the appointment of Fr. Anthony Corcoran, SJ, as Bishop of the Catholic Apostolic Administration of Kyrgyzstan. The appointment marks a significant moment for the small but vibrant Catholic community in the Kyrgyz Republic.

His Excellency Rev. Mo. Fr. Anthony Corcoran - Bishop of Kyrgyzstan's Catholics.
Fr. Anthony Corcoran, SJ - Bishop of Kyrgyzstan's Catholics.

Fr. Corcoran has served as Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Church in Kyrgyzstan since 2017, when he succeeded Fr. Nikolaus Messmer, SJ — the first Bishop of the Administration, who led the Church here from its establishment by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006 until 2017. With this appointment in 2026, Pope Leo XIV elevates Fr. Corcoran to the episcopacy — a decision that, in his own words, "affirms the Church's commitment to maintaining the integrity and structure of every local Church, regardless of its size."

A Church That Exceeds Its Numbers

The Catholic community in Kyrgyzstan numbers only a few hundred faithful — one of the smallest Catholic communities in the world. Yet, as Pope Francis once described the Church in Central Asia, it is a germoglio — a seedling. Small in size, it is alive at the roots.

The Catholic Church here operates parishes, a kindergarten and early childhood development center, a health and rehabilitation center on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul, and a range of educational and cultural programs serving children and families of all backgrounds, including those from Muslim families. Each summer, more than 1,000 children participate in programs organized by the center.

Why a Bishop?

The decision to appoint an ordained bishop to head the Apostolic Administration carries both spiritual and practical significance. An ordained bishop strengthens the pastoral leadership of the local Church and enhances its presence within the broader regional Bishops' Conference. Fr. Corcoran, who recently received Kyrgyz citizenship, brings added juridical stability to his role as shepherd of this community.

"I have known our faithful for years," Fr. Corcoran has said, "and have witnessed the remarkable faithfulness of our priests, religious, and laity to serve in very challenging conditions. I pray that this decision of the Church to call me to the episcopacy may truly encourage and strengthen the faithful and serve for the common good of this society."

Looking Ahead

The coming years will see the completion of the Good Shepherd Cathedral and Apostolic Center in Bishkek — a landmark project intended to give the Catholic Church a visible presence in the heart of the capital city, and to serve as a space for worship, culture, education, and inter-religious dialogue.

Please join us in prayer for Bishop-elect Anthony Corcoran and for the entire Catholic community in Kyrgyzstan as this new chapter begins.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
